Scrabble Today

Finally can write again after a long hiatus. Too busy to teach, but still, English Club activity is one of my favorite job.

Last week, we listen to a story at language lab, and today we just play scrabble. It was fun! Everybody seems so excited and we play for 2 hours. Its my first time to play scrabble too, anyway. (I just play it in my PC before) And I'm kinda fall in love with this game. Want to play scrabble with me, anyone?

Missing Lyrics Game

First thing first, I wanna tell you that our club is dominated by the girls. Yes, our English club. In some previous post you may see the pic of boys joining our club too, but they really just suddenly come when our activities seems interesting for them. They just come and go.

So, the club that dominated by the girls will love the activity that seems girly too. After cooking, watching cute movie, last week we've played missing lyrics game. I gave them the printed lyrics that missing in some part, and their job is to complete the lyrics.

Dara and I picked two songs; "Bad Day" from Daniel Powter and "Count on Me" by Bruno Mars. Since there aren't too many songs that 'safe' enough to listen (songs nowadays dominated by love, party, broken heart etc) this two songs are perfect.

I officially fall in love with the second song; "Count on Me" by Bruno Mars. Let's check the lyrics:

If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea
I'll sail the world to find you
If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can't see
I'll be the light to guide you

Find out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need

You can count on me like one, two, three, I'll be there
And I know when I need it
I can count on you like four, three, two, and you'll be there
'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah

If your tossin' and you turnin' and you just can't fall asleep
I'll sing a song beside you
And if you ever forget how much you really mean to me
Everyday I will remind you

Find out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need

You can count on me like one, two, three, I'll be there
And I know when I need it
I can count on you like four, three, two, and you'll be there
'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do

You'll always have my shoulder when you cry
I'll never let go, never say goodbye
You know you can count on me like one, two, three, I'll be there
And I know when I need it
I can count on you like four, three, two, and you'll be there
'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do

You can count on me 'cause I can count on you...

This song has playing well with the words. It's perfect for listening and missing lyrics gaming, specially for high school grader. This song tell us about friendship and there are idioms too, we can translate and interpret it after listening. Well done, Bruno Mars. You did it great. Thank you :p

English Club Lately

Just posted about the first meeting in the early of September month, and now  we're stepped to October. It means we already have a month having this English Club activity.
I feel so terrible when I handle it myself; especially because I ain't too influence in speaking English. I keep searching and reading tips for handling English Club, and finally find this tips:
"find for a volunteer, don't handle it all by yourself. Make a poster about volunteer needed"
Got an idea, I called everyone that I think will be eligible to be a volunteer in coaching English Club. Fortunately, I have Dara and she agreed to assist me in coaching English Club. Dara and I have so many idea about English club activity, and we make it! We makes the students laugh in every meeting. At the second meeting, we learn how to describe picture by playing a mini game, at the third meeting we played crossword puzzle and the game that similar with "Eat Bulaga Indonesia". And at the fourth meeting, we watched Despicable Me movie (the students was so excited. Twenty audience was join in this session).

In our October first meeting, we held role-playing game. Every group of students should make script to perform a fairy tale in front of the class. We always have various character of students; the funny one, the brilliant one, the cute one.. that's why every English Club session has never be flat.

Anyway, we have choose the president yesterday. Hope everything going well since then.

English Club First Meeting Activity

It's all about greeting!
I'm so excited in the first day meeting with English Club participants, yet so nervous. In my school where I work, we just have 5 class with about 30 students each. So, I don't expect for too many students that interest to join English Club.

My expectation was right, for the first meeting, we have just about 20 participants and there's just two boys. They call me "Miss Vicky" if we're meet in English Club activity, and I told them that I'm their friend, facilitator, not just teacher in our extracurricular activity.

They haven't known any other yet, so I  decided to make a mainstream greeting, and a mini game to make them remember the whole class' name.

The "mainstream greeting" section is just like the mainstream greeting; I told all the students to stand and introduce themselves one by one. I ask them to told us their name, their class, their hobby, their dream, and their motivation to join English club. Students look not too exciting to do this section. Anyway, their mainly motivation to join English club are their wish to be fluent in English.

After the mainstream greeting section, I copy one of the methods that I found in Youtube days ago. Here is the video

Yup, i used that "word chain game" and modified it to be a "Remembering your friends' name" but with same methods. I brought a little panda (It's stuffed toy, exactly. A tiny doll) because i have no toy-ball to throw.

Firstly, I ask the students to make a circle, and I throw the stuffed panda to one of them, randomly. Then I ask them; "show me which is Imelsa?" and the student who catch the panda should throw it to someone whose name Imelsa, and its going on.

Student start to excited to this game, especially when I change the question to another detail one, like: "Show me, your friend whom want to be a movie director?" If they focus when the mainstream greeting section, they will guessing true. But if not, and they make three mistakes in guessing friend, they will be punished. The punishment is to singing in the middle of circle.

The students look so excited. They laughing and singing, some was blushing red while singing. after that, I try the word chain games too, and some students who fail in this game, was punished and they should perform a girl-band-like-dancing in front of class. Our afternoon was full of laugh.

Hope next meeting will be fun too.http://eemoticons.nethttp://eemoticons.net

English Club. Hmmmbrr

If you're a grammar nazi and you read my blog in detail, I'm sure you're going to explode because i've made many grammatical error in this blog. Sorry for that. I confess that my English is poor, both written and spoken. But, did you know that i have a big interest in learning English? I just have basic English because my hobby; I love to watching western movies and listening western song, it make me eager to learn English more.

I start writing statuses, blog post, etc in English but still have no idea did my English are okay or not. If my written English still poor, can you imagine how poor does my spoken English? I'm not fluently enough in speaking English, always feeling nervous every time I blabbering in English. And in this poor condition, I received a shocking job duty; BEING A COACH IN ENGLISH CLUB in my school!!!

I'm considering this duty much, I can't sleep well thinking about what will I do, what if there's student who can talk fluently than I do, what if I speak wrong, blabbering wrong, what if.. what if.. what if..
http://eemoticons.net
BUT, I'm one who like a challenge in my career. And I think, this is the best moment that I can drilled myself to study english more. So, I take this job and the first meeting just held yesterday. I even make a poster to gather the participans.

Okay, I know that I'm not good at designing. My sense for mix-matching colors are bad. I choose red, black and white to represent England Flag, but it makes me remember about the envelope colors. So I print it in grayscale.

I will write about the first meeting yesterday. Keep reading guys ;)
